What is the sirtfood diet?
The sirtfood diet, or in other words the sirtuin diet, was developed by nutritionists Glen Matten and Aidan Goggins. These two American nutrition experts were determined to discover a nutritional plan that would not be based on fasting and relentless restrictions. Therefore, they decided to approach the problem in an innovative way and focus on including products that help you lose weight in your daily diet, instead of avoiding products that usually cause weight gain. And that’s how they came up with using the discussed sirtuins, which gave the sirtfood diet its name, as a tool for a fight with excessive weight.
And what are those sirtuins?
Sirtuins are enzyme proteins responsible for activating regenerative processes within living organisms. Their name comes from the abbreviation SIR, meaning “silent information regulator”. It’s all about regulating genetic information. Sirtuin proteins activate the expression (revealing) of the genes, the activity of which slows down the aging processes and dying of cells, significantly accelerates metabolism and strengthens immunity. The essence of the sirtuin diet lies in activating sirtuins, so that they regulate the expression of the desired genes supporting fat burning and inhibiting the aging processes.
How does the sirtfood diet activate sirtuins?
There are two fundamental ways, in which dietary habits can stimulate sirtuin activation.
The first way to activate sirtuin proteins consists in an increased consumption of plant foods rich in polyphenols. It assumes a temporary reduction in caloric content and a long-term introduction of products rich in polyphenols into the daily diet. These steps are introduced gradually over the three stages of the sirtfood nutritional plan.
Stage 1 lasts 3-5 days. This is definitely the most difficult stage, but it is very short-term and necessary for the dream sirtuin activation. It consists in maintaining the daily caloric content at the maximum level of 1000 calories a day. The nutritional basis of this stage are vegetable and fruit cocktails rich in polyphenols.
Stage 2 takes approximately 5 days. The caloric content should not exceed 1500 kcal a day, but you can already introduce the consumption of light solid meals. However, you still need to make sure that the basis of the diet here are foods rich particularly in antioxidants.
Stage 3 is the final stage of the sirtfood diet. It has no time limit and does not require calorie restrictions; all it requires is a regular consumption of foods rich in polyphenols, such as matcha green tea or raw cocoa. It is also obviously worth remembering to stay away from highly processed products, rich in fats and simple carbohydrates.
